If you’re not already, here is your sign to start making your own homemade guacamole! Honestly, nothing quite compares to fresh guacamole at home and it couldn’t be easier to make.

This guacamole takes less than 10 minutes and is loaded with good-for-you ingredients like avocado, zesty lime juice, tomato and spices. It’s great served with your favourite tortilla chips or veggies, and is always a hit at gatherings!

Homemade healthy guacamole ingredients

  • Avocado: make sure you are using nice ripe avocados for this recipe. It should be firm but have a slight give to it.
  • Lime: this one is a must! Use fresh lime juice for the best flavour. It also helps keep the guacamole from turning brown.
  • Red onion: you can also use white onion if you don’t have red on hand.
  • Garlic: fresh garlic is best.
  • Ground cumin: this adds just the right amount of extra flavour.
  • Jalapeño: for a bit of a kick! Feel free to skip it if you don’t want the added spice.
  • Tomato: roma tomatoes are a good option because they are less juicy, preventing your guacamole from becoming watery. If you’re not eating your guacamole right away, I recommend removing the seeds from the tomatoes before adding to the rest of the ingredients. You can also skip tomato all together if you’d prefer!
  • Sea salt and pepper: this brings everything together. Using enough salt can make such a difference with the overall taste of the guacamole, so make sure you’re adding enough.

Is guacamole good for you?

Absolutely! Guacamole is typically made using fresh, wholesome ingredients. Avocados make up the base of guacamole and are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. They’re also a great source of dietary fibre which is important for gut health.

How to keep guacamole from turning brown

Avocados naturally oxidize when exposed to air, which is why it turns brown. It will still taste good, but to prevent this from happening there are a few things you can try:

  • Plastic wrap: press plastic wrap to the top of the guacamole so it’s not exposed to air.
  • Water: pour a little bit of water over the guacamole before storing in the fridge. When ready to eat, dump out the water and give it a good stir!
  • Lime juice: the lime juice in the guacamole will help prevent browning, however you can also add a few lime slices to the top of the guac before storing.
